SUPERVISES: Provides functional supervision of up to 10 student employees
SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Assistant Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive healthcare and injury management for student‑athletes across all varsity sports, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and medical coverage for practices and competitions. The role supports pre‑participation medical clearance, coordinates care with physicians and external providers and maintains accurate electronic medical and insurance documentation. The position ensures compliance with NCAA, conference, HIPAA, and FERPA standards while contributing to daily athletic training operations and student wellness education. The Assistant Athletic Trainer also serves as a communication liaison among coaches, healthcare professionals, and student‑athletes.
In carrying out these responsibilities, the incumbent follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student-Athlete Education & Wellness
- Supports student athlete well-being by directing individuals to appropriate mental health resources and supports stress management through education and referral
- Trains coaching staff and student workers on first aid and CPR protocols
- Represents Athletics on university committees related to health and safety, as requested by supervisor
Program Administration, Compliance & Operational Coordination
- Assists with injury prevention, evaluation, care, and rehabilitation of student-athletes
- Coordinates pre-season physicals, manages pre-participation medical clearance, and facilitates scheduling with team physicians and external healthcare providers
- Coordinates insurance claims and medical referrals for student athletes
- Maintains comprehensive medical records and manages insurance documentation, including pre-authorizations, claims, and follow-up communications
- Designs progressive individual rehabilitation programs
- Provides medical coverage for athletic practices and competitions, including home events and select away competitions, across traditional and non-traditional seasons
- Ensures compliance with NCAA, conference and institutional policies and procedures, including the NCAA Principals of Ethical Conduct, and HIPAA and FERPA regulations governing student-athlete health information
- Acts as primary communication liaison between student-athletes, Athletics staff, parents, medical and allied health professionals regarding injury status and return-to-play decisions
- Assists with managing athletic training facilities and the inventory of medical supplies
- Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned and/or the job description changed periodically to reflect changing organizational needs
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from a CAATE-accredited athletic training program
- EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated (3 years) experience in athletic training in a professional, high school, or collegiate setting and/or gained through clinical education as part of an accredited athletic training degree program
- OTHER:
- NATA BOC certification
- MA Athletic Trainer license
- CPR/AED/FIRST AID training and certification
- Weekend, evening, and holiday hours are required
- Occasional local, regional, and national travel to off-campus locations
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and eligibility to operate a motor vehicle
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree
- Experience working in a collegiate setting
- Experience in multi-sport, broad-based intercollegiate programs
- CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor
- Experience serving as a clinical preceptor for athletic training students

- Proficiency with standard office software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent)

- Knowledge of the evaluation, care, and rehabilitation of sports injuries
- Maintains compliance with local, state, federal, and NCAA laws, guidelines, and regulations
- Ability to maintain professional certification(s) and licensure(s)
- Ability to operate a University-owned motor vehicle to transport members of the University community (e.g., student employees, student athletes), as needed
- Ability to lift, move, and carry at least 50 pounds
- Ability to handle various medical-grade chemicals and substances, as well as potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens
- Ability to stand for long durations of time
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow
- Ability to operate a University-owned motor vehicle to transport students, as needed
