OFFICIAL JOB TITLE: Head Coach for Men’s Soccer - Recruitment and Special Events Support

FLSA STATUS: Exempt 

REPORTS TO:  Deputy Director of Athletics 

SUPERVISES: Exercises direct supervision of 2 to 3 part-time Assistant Coaches and 2 to 3 student employees.

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Head Coach for Men’s Soccer/Recruitment and Special Events Support performs all of the duties associated with being the Head Coach including managing games and practices, recruitment, fundraising, retention, budget management, supervision and mentoring of student-athletes, scheduling, etc.  The incumbent supports special events related to recruitment and game-day experience, including but not limited to game promotions, in-game entertainments, alumni and special recognition events. The incumbent also provides back-up support for department recruiting activities during the winter sport season.

Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages practice and game preparation with an emphasis on strategy and skill development; organizes, plans, schedules, and conducts safe training, practices, and conditioning activities
  • Assesses skills, instructs student-athletes on technique, and oversees team performance
  • Maintains and enhances expertise and game strategies
  • Fosters an academic and athletic experience which aligns with the ideals of the NCAA Division III philosophy
  • Embraces and models the NCAA Division III philosophy which emphasizes a balance of academics and athletics
  • Creates a diverse and inclusive team environment that leads to student-athletes meeting their full potential
  • Provides mentorship to student-athletes and provides opportunities for student-athletes to receive and provide feedback
  • Devises recruiting plans, implements recruiting strategies, and identifies, evaluates, and actively recruits student-athletes
  • Manages and maintains the student-athlete recruiting database
  • Devises annual plans to meet fundraising goals and engages alumni and other key constituents
  • Adheres to and assists with the development of the team budget
  • Maintains and submits Pro card records and adheres to departmental procedures relative to purchase and travel expenditures
  • Assists with the coordination of team travel and logistics, including transportation, lodging, and meals
  • Creates a competitive schedule within departmental parameters and coordinates the scheduling of facilities for practices
  • Hires, oversees, evaluates, and develops assistant coaches and volunteers
  • Works with department staff to support the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes, monitor the academic progress of student-athletes, and ensure that athletic eligibility and academic standards are maintained
  • Provides the department staff with specific team information, as requested
  • Assists with the selection and ordering of new team equipment and maintains commitment to department branding standards
  • Manages the social media team accounts in accordance with University and department policies
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of and abides by NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations
  • Adheres to Little East Conference policies (e.g., sportsmanship, video exchange, meetings)
  • Reports any alleged violations of NCAA, conference, or institutional rules and regulations to the compliance coordinator and acknowledges self as a mandatory reporter (CSA)
  • Develops, plans, and promotes summer camps and/or clinics
  • Ensures varsity team members are compliant with trainings, forms, and policies
  • Provides support for department recruiting activities, especially during the winter sport season (e.g., accessing enrollment information for coaches, serving as liaison at University Admission events, leveraging campus partnerships to maximize on-campus recruiting visits)
  • Supports the fan engagement outreach plan for athletic programs, including but not limited to game-day events and  programming, aimed at increasing attendance and enhancing the fan experience
  • Assists with coordinating student-athlete recognition ceremonies, alumni events, and team anniversaries around winter and spring athletic events (e.g., half-time presentations, socials)
  • Assists with the organization and execution of the end-of-year awards banquet
  • Serves as an athletic administrator on duty at select home events
  • Attends staff meetings, department events, and campus events, as requested
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned and/or the job description changed periodically to reflect changing organization needs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree
  • EXPERIENCE:   
    • Demonstrated (over 3 years) coaching experience at the collegiate level
    • Successful (over 1 year) experience in recruiting student-athletes
    • Former collegiate playing experience
  • OTHER:   
    • Ability to work flexible hours which includes evenings and weekends
    • Local and regional travel required
    • Valid driver’s license
    • Successfully pass the annual NCAA Division III Rules Test

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree
  • Head coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level
  • Previous experience in athletic administration at the collegiate level

  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Responsive and timely in communication to supervisor, support staff, and all general inquiries
  • Demonstrated commitment to the academic success of student-athletes
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team atmosphere
  • Strong commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy and of the Athletic Department
  • Strong commitment to professional development
  • Knowledge and ability to implement University and NCAA policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain favorable relations with University and community groups
  • Ability to work independently and organize an integral area
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision, generate new ideas independently, and be a self-starter
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR, AED, First Aid certification and complete assigned training annually
