SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Department of Fisheries Oceanography at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) beginning in September 2025. We are searching for creative and innovative scholars with a demonstrated record for high-impact applied research commensurate with the level of appointment, and a commitment to contributing to a strong university community in research, education, and external impact. We seek scientists with research interests in marine ecosystem science and fisheries, aquaculture, or marine policy and resource economics, with focus on but not limited to the Northwest Atlantic Ocean continental shelf and related to the development of offshore renewable energy. Preferred qualifications include (1) teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level; (2) prior experience working with academic, government, and industry partners; and (3) research experience with one or more of the following:

  • Interdisciplinary fisheries science applied to regional, national or international fishery management
  • Monitoring and mitigating impact of offshore energy development on fisheries, protected species and marine ecosystems
  • Modelling and predicting marine ecosystem changes in the short and long term
  • Social and economic assessment of impact of offshore energy development on fisheries and coastal communities
  • Policy and management strategies of offshore wind energy development as related to fisheries and ecosystems
  • Economic assessment and impact of seafood production, both capture and culture, including shoreside and supply chain dynamics and market opportunities for seafood products
  • Governance, policy and management strategies of sustainable seafood production in New England and around the world
  • Marine spatial planning and management
  • Research on candidate finfish and new shellfish species for nearshore and offshore aquaculture in New England
  • Research on coastal environment related to aquaculture, and its ecosystem interactions and impacts
  • Research on sustainable and alternative fish feed for aquaculture species

UMass Dartmouth is the only Massachusetts national research university south of Boston and serves as a catalyst for the development of marine science and technology industries along the south coast of Massachusetts. UMass Dartmouth offers a world-class education to more than 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students each year in nearly 60 undergraduate and 50 graduate (MS & PhD) programs offered by the School for Marine Science and Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, Charlton College of Business, School of Law, College of Visual and Performing Arts, and College of Nursing. The SMAST campus includes two state-of-the-art marine science facilities, located in on the shore of Clark’s Cove in New Bedford (the No. 1 fishing port by value in the US). The campus is about an hour south of Boston, a half-hour east of Providence, and a half-hour west of Cape Cod. SMAST offers graduate degree programs which focus on interdisciplinary basic-to-applied marine sciences and the development of related innovative technologies (https://www.umassd.edu/smast/). In addition to the scholarly marine science and technology communities, the SMAST mission also emphasizes interaction with regional industry, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations on compelling regional marine-related issues and technological development. The SMAST marine science campus, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, creates a major marine science hub in the Northeast US, bringing together more than 150 faculty, students, and staff engaged in education, research and policy related to commercial fishing, coastal preservation, ocean observation, climate change, and offshore renewable energy development.

This hire is part of broader efforts by UMass Dartmouth around marine research and education and will avail the advantage of the South Coast and New Bedford region’s emergence and strengthening position as a central hub for the blue economy, including regional and national investment in research and workforce development surrounding coastal communities, climate-ready fisheries, and the offshore wind energy industry. The successful candidate will expand the existing missions of the Department of Fisheries Oceanography, and link to other blue economy strengths at UMass Dartmouth, including in the Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, and the Charlton College of Business.

Tenured and Tenure-track faculty members at SMAST are expected to develop independent research programs that attract external funding; teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate level; supervise students and postdocs in their area of research; and participate in service to the department, school, university, and discipline. Candidates must have an earned PhD in a field relevant to the position applied for, have an excellent record of scholarly work, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including a dedication to teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION:?>Ph.D. relevant to one of the following research areas: marine science, marine ecology, fisheries science, aquaculture, socioeconomics
  • EXPERIENCE: Postdoctoral or faculty experience and a corresponding publication and grant record
  • OTHER: Strong written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to work in cooperative research

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated strong pedagogical skills.
  • Experience in organizing and participating in relevant interdisciplinary research.
  • Prior experience working with academic institutions and government and industry partners is also desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Background and experience in marine ecosystem science, fisheries science, aquaculture, or marine policy and socioeconomics, demonstrating ability in environmental data collection and analysis.
