SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Systems Administrator is responsible for Windows and Linux server system support. They support systems administration for both on-premises and cloud-hosted environments. They deploy, maintain, and administer physical and virtual systems. They oversee Disaster Recovery Business Continuity (DRBC) operations of these systems and applications. The Systems Administrator supports the Cloud Systems Administrator in the daily management of the Microsoft 365 suite, Active Directory, associated shares, and user configurations. They manage the multi-factor authentication service. The Systems Administrator works jointly with other systems administrators on maintaining on-premises IT infrastructure facilities. Their typical week consists of deploying and monitoring servers and server security, backup operations, planning, patching and upgrading operating systems and applications, resolving escalated support cases, and regular meetings with the IT Infrastructure team and other constituents. They are responsible for documenting their work. They actively seek improvements in their daily workflows and processes to improve efficiency. The Systems Administrator provides excellent customer service to our campus community in support of the academic and research mission at UMass Dartmouth.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Deploys and manages virtualized Windows and Linux servers across the University
  • Supports administration of Microsoft 365 ecosystem to include Office/Exchange/Teams/Intune/Sentinel/OneDrive/SharePoint environments
  • Tests and deploys patches, fixes, and upgrades to systems and applications; documents evidence that established protocols are followed to maintain audit compliance
  • Ensures backup schedules are maintained; regularly tests restoration functions and documents evidence of the tests
  • Supports Active Directory, multi-factor authentication, and related identity management systems
  • Works with the Cloud Systems Engineer and Cloud Systems Administrator to plan and execute the migration from DUO MFA to Microsoft Authenticator
  • Collaborates in the monitoring of environmental controls and power infrastructure for on-premise compute facilities
  • Provides support for departmental and research systems utilization of virtual server infrastructure and virtual computer lab support
  • Participates in security engagements and vulnerability scanning, as well as IT audits and compliance efforts
  • Supports log aggregation and analysis and critical system monitoring (SIEM integration)
  • Provides support for Linux and research systems connecting to campus infrastructure and virtual computer lab support
  • Stays current with vendor update releases and their criticality
  • Creates and maintains technical documentation within the scope of their responsibilities
  • Tracks and resolves escalated cases in the IT case management system
  • Promotes cross-team and cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Participates in system and application integration testing efforts and provides feedback to technical staff
  • Participates in professional development opportunities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:   

Bachelor's Degree

EXPERIENCE:  

  • Demonstrated (over 3 years) experience with the administration of Linux and Windows systems
  • Demonstrated (over 3 years) experience implementing and managing application life-cycles
  • Demonstrated (over 3 years) experience with large-scale backup/restore (DRBC operations)
  • Previous experience with virtualization technologies

OTHER:             

  • Will need to be available for off-hours, evening and/or weekends as projects dictate
  • Will need to lift and move technology equipment
  • Some travel may be required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Significant issue resolution skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work assignments successfully in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to approach projects and problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm, and innovation
  • Ability to make written and oral presentations clearly and effectively
  • Ability to create and maintain technical documentation (i.e. workflow diagrams, implementation instructions)

PREFERRED:

  • Experience working in higher education
  • Previous experience with the Microsoft 365 A5 suite
  • Previous experience with VEEAM backup infrastructure
  • Relevant certifications in system administration
