SUPERVISES: Supervises assistant coaches and student employees associated with field hockey
SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: Serves as the head coach of the Women’s Field Hockey program. Performs all of the duties associated with being the Head Coach, including managing games and practices, recruitment, fundraising, retention, budget management, supervision and mentoring of student-athletes and scheduling, etc. Supports student-athlete leadership and development activities including, but not limited to, facilitating student success workshops, study halls, monitoring retention, and partnering with campus resources to assist academically at-risk student-athletes.
Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for practice and game preparation with an emphasis on strategy and skill development; organize, plan, schedule, and conduct safety training, practices and conditioning activities in a professional manner
- Assess skills and instruct student-athletes on technique; responsible for all areas of team performance
- Maintain and enhance expertise and game strategies to be competitive within the conference and regionally
- Foster an academic and athletic experience that aligns with the ideals of the NCAA Division III philosophy
- Embrace and model the philosophy which emphasizes a balance of academics and athletics
- Create a diverse and inclusive team environment that leads to student-athletes meeting their full potential academically, athletically, and in the community; included are the lessons of character building and life skills (e.g., sportsmanship, leadership, civic engagement, career development, and time management)
- Provide mentorship to student-athletes around taking responsibility for their actions; address behavior that could be detrimental to an individual and the team
- Devise an annual recruiting plan and implement recruiting strategies to yield student-athletes; identify, evaluate, and actively recruit academically and athletically qualified student-athletes
- Manage and maintain an updated recruiting database to enable the recruiting coordinator to provide monthly recruiting reports
- Devise an annual plan to meet fundraising goals and engage alumni and other key constituents
- Adhere to and assist with the development of the team budget
- Adhere to departmental procedures relative to purchasing and travel expenditures; maintain and submit Procard records to the department representative
- Assist with the coordination of team travel and logistics, including vehicles, lodging, and meals
- Responsible for creating a competitive schedule within departmental parameters
- Coordinate the scheduling of facilities for practices
- Provide opportunities for student-athletes to receive and provide feedback
- Hire, oversee, evaluate, and develop assistant coaches and volunteers
- Work with the sports medicine and strength and conditioning staff to support the physical and mental well-being needs of the student-athletes
- Collaborate with athletic staff to monitor the academic progress of student-athletes to ensure that athletic eligibility and academic standards are maintained
- Provide the athletic communications staff with specific team information when requested
- Assist with the selection and ordering of new team equipment; maintain a commitment to department branding standards
- Responsible for managing the social media team accounts in accordance with university and department policies
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of and abides by NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations
- Adhere to Little East Conference policies (e.g., sportsmanship, video exchange, and meetings)
- Report any alleged violations of NCAA, conference, or institutional rules and regulations to the compliance coordinator in a timely manner; acknowledges self as a mandatory reporter (CSA)
- Develop, plan, and promote summer camps and/or clinics
- Ensure varsity team members are compliant with trainings, forms, and policies
- Responsible for partnering with the Athletic Communications Director to execute promotional plans and events through department social media platforms
- Other responsibilities will include serving as an athletic administrator on duty at home events in the spring
- Support the department efforts at student-athlete leadership and development, including but not limited to, facilitating student success workshops, study halls, monitoring retention, and partnering with campus resources to assist academically at-risk student-athletes
- Expected to attend all staff meetings, department events, and campus events when requested to do so by the Director of Athletics
- Performs other duties as requested by the Director of Athletics
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated (over 3 seasons) head or assistant coaching experience at the collegiate level
- Successful experience in recruiting student-athletes
- Former collegiate playing experience
OTHER:
- Ability to work flexible hours which includes evenings and weekends; local and regional travel required
- Must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and the ability to drive vans to and from contests; Driver’s license
must remain valid throughout the duration of employment in the position
- Takes and successfully passes the annual NCAA Division III Rules Test, maintains certifications, and completes assigned trainings annually

- Ability to obtain and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Head coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level
- Previous experience in athletic administration at the collegiate level
- Master’s Degree
- Bachelor’s degree in sports-related field
