SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Student Support Advisor supports advising and related retention activities for OCE students. They are responsible for presenting OCE programs to students in a variety of settings, utilizing communications techniques that most effectively engage students in an effort to grow and retain OCE students. They assist prospective and current students with matriculation, advising, referrals and retention issues.

Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides academic advising and support to OCE students and prospective students as assigned
  • Consults on issues pertaining to transfer course equivalencies for current/potential students
  • Develops and updates student academic plans as needed
  • Supports potential new, transfer, and readmit students with pre-advising assistance
  • Responds to inquiries from prospective students when forwarded from Enrollment Specialists
  • Communicates with various departments regarding their adult/online students
  • Assists internal and external transfer students in understanding requirements and choosing appropriate academic path
  • Supports students in academic jeopardy to develop strategies for academic success
  • Assists department directors with retention and support initiatives as well as related data collection
  • Attends professional seminars, workshops and conferences on academic advisement/adult & online learners in higher education
  • Supports student recruitment activities on and off campus, such as open houses, information sessions, college and business fairs and other recruitment activities, as necessary
  • Utilizes computer technology, tools and databases including Peoplesoft, CRM, Excel etc. to develop and provide reports that track, monitor and report on OCE enrollment management activities as scheduled/requested
  • Coordinates and assists with registration and enrollment of online populations
  • Participates in cross training activities that facilitate enrollment management responsiveness and student-centered services in order to promote academic success and retention of students
  • Facilitates student transition and support onboarding process for new and returning students
  • Utilizes retention software to monitor the academic performance and enrollment management needs for OCE students
  • Assists departmental directors in planning course offerings relative to student needs
  • Other job-related duties and responsibilities may be assigned and/or the job description changed periodically to reflect changing organization needs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Bachelor's Degree

EXPERIENCE:  Previous (over 1 year) experience advising undergraduate students; experience with web-based advising tools.

OTHER: Available for evening/weekend hours as needed. Some travel required. Eligible for remote work options.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work well independently as well as on a team
  • Knowledgeable of the university and college curriculum content and requirements
  • Able to counsel students in severe academic difficulty and about academic issues
  • Strong knowledge of the University academic policies and procedures as well as eligibility requirements
  • Strong organizational leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Able to relate to students, faculty and University personnel
  • Able to report and interpret data
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of advising principles and practices
  • Knowledge of university resources: academic, financial, health, etc.
  • Problem-solving skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Master's Degree

EXPERIENCE:  Demonstrated experience (over 3 years) advising undergraduate students, particularly adult/online learners.
