The College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applicants for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor in Art Education to begin in Fall 2023. We seek an educator with expertise in K-12 art education, licensure/accreditation, a research trajectory at the intersections of applied practice of critical theory and studio practice, and an interest in contributing to the development of a future multi-disciplinary arts (visual art, music, theater, and dance) education program.

As the creative arts center within a research university, CVPA invites a colleague able to creatively implement the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) approved program while situating art education at the forefront of contemporary art practice. Our Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art Education and Master of Art Education Post-baccalaureate (MAE Post-bac) initial licensure programs include direct engagement with schools and the community. Through these partnerships, we incorporate emergent media arts and public practices that are redefining visual competencies, expanding possibilities for PK-12 visual arts educators. A strong background in working across disciplines (i.e., integrating art across content) and the ability to apply studio and theoretical practice in clinical settings is highly desired.

Minimum Qualifications: Terminal degree (Ed.D., or Ph.D. in Art Education) at the time of appointment. Three years of K-12 teaching experience. Collegiate experience as a teacher of record.

Preferred Qualifications: Successful teaching of courses required for initial licensure in art education; Ability to assume the role of program supervisor for pre-service visual arts teacher licensure; Knowledge of Massachusetts Visual Arts Frameworks (2019) and the DESE Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP) system; Knowledge of media arts and experience teaching secondary media arts education.

Responsibilities include four classes in the Fall and Spring semesters, field placement coordination for courses requiring Field-based Experience (FBE) observations, advisement of Art Education (AED) majors, and state-required record keeping.

Courses are expected to include: AED 200: Methods and Materials; AED 201: Observation and Assessment; AED 302: Technology for Art Educators; AED 305: Social History and Philosophy of Art Education; AED 410/510 Curriculum Design; AED 415/515: Special Needs: Current Issues; AED 408: Pre-practicum Seminar with coordination of student teaching placements, AED 411/412/414/511/512: Practicum Seminar and Practicum Supervisions. The successful applicant will serve as AED option head and work closely with Department Chair regarding scheduling needs for the undergraduate program and with the MAE Graduate Program Director as related to post-baccalaureate licensure courses and requirements.
