SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: In coordination with the Director of T&F/XC, serve as the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country programs and coach the distance events during indoor/outdoor track & field. Perform all of the duties associated with being the head coach including managing meets, events and practices, recruitment, budget management, supervision and mentoring of student-athletes, scheduling, etc. Will follow the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of  student-athletes.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In coordination with and under the supervision of the Director of T&F/XC, perform duties associated with managing and serving as the Head Men’s and Women’s XC Coach and Distance Coach on the Men’s and Women’s Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field staff, including but not limited to organizing and coordinating intercollegiate schedules, team travel, recruitment and retention of student-athletes, academic oversight, community service, fundraising, marketing, and development and management of sports budgets.
  • Organizes, plans, schedules, and conducts safe training, practices, and conditioning activities for XC/distance student-athletes.
  • Assesses skills and instructs XC/distance student-athletes on individual/team athletic performance.
  • Schedules and supervises competitive XC contests, and coordinates travel options with appropriate administrators.
  • Plays an active part in coordinating with the Director of T&F/XC on an annual recruiting plan to meet XC/T&F roster goals and attain the full roster growth potential of all teams. Helps to identify, evaluate, and actively recruit academically and athletically qualified student-athletes through cultivation of a talent pool that meets the athletic and academic standards of the University. Conducts correspondence of interest through conventional and digital communication. Evaluates talent off-site at competitions and through recruiting service materials. Invites and coordinates campus visits. Facilitates Admissions application and continues engagement throughout student college decision process.
  • Assists in planning and oversight of annual budgetary expenditures for teams in Operational, Fundraising, and Revenue accounts. Adds to annual revenue and fundraising goals, including 1) financial supplementation through hosting home competitions and fundraising events (Giving Tuesday, Corsair Challenge), 2) alumni and key constituent engagement (Hall of Fame, Homecoming and alumni events, sponsor solicitation), and 3) facilitating professional connections for current students with alumni.
  • Monitors the academic progress of student-athletes to ensure that athletic eligibility and academic standards are maintained in compliance with NCAA and University expectations.
  • Works with the Athletics Communications staff relative to team publicity and statistics, while maintaining team records and social media presence to engage prospective students, current team members, their families, and program alumni.
  • Works with Sports Medicine staff to ensure correct health records and injury procedures are followed, and recovery/return-to-play training is appropriately administered for optimal performance.
  • Works with Strength & Conditioning staff to develop complimentary training programs that optimize individual and team performance.
  • Works with Equipment Room staff to help distribute, maintain, collect, and inventory athletic equipment.
  • Monitors the condition of sports facilities and works with Athletic Facilities to maintain for practice, competitions, and events.
  • Helps to administer home meet events (currently: XC – 1-2 home contests annually, largest on-campus XC event in New England plus conference championships when eligible in rotation; OT&F – 2 home contests annually, including hosting the conference championship)
  • Monitors and maintains team equipment, and recommends new purchases when necessary.
  • Participates in regular department staff meetings, and on committees as requested by administration.
  • Abides by all NCAA, Conference, and institutional eligibility regulations and NCAA principles of ethical conduct.
  • Actively participates in regional and national professional coaches organizations, increasing the representation of the University’s program interests in recommended legislation to the NCAA.
  • Nominates students for eligible conference, regional, and national recognition.
  • Serves as a reliable resource for students regarding academics, physical and mental health, and professional growth.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Experience:  Demonstrated (over 3 seasons/years) of assistant or head coaching experience at the collegiate level

Successful experience in recruiting and retaining student-athletes

Previous experience in athletic administration at the collegiate level

OTHER:   Ability to work flexible hours which includes evenings and weekends. Local and regional  travel required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Extensive knowledge of the sports of cross country and track & field.
  • Ability to recruit and retain quality cross country and track & field student-athletes.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills. Responsive and timely in manner.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the academic success of student-athletes.
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team atmosphere on the T&F/XC staff and within the athletic department.
  • Strong commitment to the NCAA DIII philosophy; shares and promotes the philosophy of the athletic department.
  • Ability to counsel student-athletes.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student and colleague population.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement University and NCAA policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain favorable relations with University and community groups.
  • Ability to work independently and organize an integral area within the Department of Athletics.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to generate new ideas independently; must be a self-starter.
  • Ability to optimally utilize and adapt relevant technology, hardware, and software.
  • Ability to obtain CPR, AED, First Aid certification.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Head coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level
  • Master’s Degree
  • Bachelor’s degree in sports-related field.
