SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:  The Director is responsible for administrative oversight of the career center office, directly supervising staff, and conducting other necessary tasks associated with the daily operation of the career center. Responsible for the overall administration and management of a comprehensive center serving all academic programs at the University, and will provide leadership in developing innovative services and programs to meet the needs of undergraduate and graduate students, alumni and the employment community. Support existing services and programs including career development, professional development, career planning, internship development, graduate school preparation, and assessment of services and develop new initiatives and efforts aligned with the University’s strategic plan.  Function as a highly effective connector, collaborator, and communicator, who actively participates in the UMass Dartmouth community and the broader employment community.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In consultation with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Career and Civic Engagement, set the strategic vision and develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive career services strategy and program that supports UMassD’s commitment to preparing graduates for professional success and then help launch their careers.
  • Lead staff in the development and implementation of a comprehensive department strategy and shared strategic priorities to ensure that stakeholder needs are met and that students and alumni have access to relevant and timely career information.
  • Take the lead on developing and nurturing Employer and alumni relations.  Continuously strive to increase the quantity and quality of internship and full-time employment opportunities for UMassD students and alums.  Cultivate and develop job shadowing, internship and full-time opportunities for students as well as career education and programming opportunities in collaboration with employers and staff. Build alumni infinity groups to assists in networking, career education, and full-time employment.
  • Future Ready – Work with others throughout the University to prepare UMassD students for jobs of the future by imbedding skills and competencies needed for the future (ex. professionalism).
  • Work with Center staff to identify and reach underserved student populations.
  • Develop an understanding of the unique needs within the various colleges and academic programs; prioritize and direct initiatives to develop programs and resources relevant to those needs in collaboration with faculty, department chairs and academic deans.
  • Leverage relationships with faculty and employers, encouraging partnerships and innovation in engaged learning and experiential education.
  • Coordinate efforts with campus offices including enrollment management, communications, institutional research, alumni relations, schools and other departments across the University to effectively meet the needs of students – prospective, current and former.  More specifically, work with Alumni Relations and the leadership in the UMassD Online to identify the most effective and efficient opportunities to serve specific populations with existing staffing and resources.
  • Identify and implement student leadership positions in the Center, expanding on the pilot Peer Career Mentor program to engage students as both peer career advisors and brand ambassadors.
  • Provide exemplary leadership, development, mentorship and supervision to Center staff. Provide support and assistance in setting performance goals, reaching goals, and engaging in self-assessment and conduct annual performance reviews. Review the organization and roles of Center staff to integrate state-of-the-art practices, and ensure roles and responsibilities capitalize on strengths and best meet the ever-changing needs of our student and alumni and employer populations.
  • In collaboration with Institutional Research and in partnership with faculty and academic affairs leadership, oversee collection of data related to Center services satisfaction, and to inform the post-graduate career outcomes survey, utilizing NACE guidelines, and partner with appropriate University department/personnel to create publications that tell the story of our students’ success for prospective students and their families.
  • Maintain a regular schedule of student appointments (walk in and scheduled) to ensure connectivity to student needs and understanding of the lived experiences of students and the Center team.
  • Oversee the department's budget and ensure that resources are aligned with priorities.
  • Represent UMass Dartmouth in various local, regional, state and national organizations to increase presence of the UMass Dartmouth Career Center and our role in workforce development and career education of students and alumni. Stay current with industry standards and changes, revise programs to appropriately reflect current and emerging trends. Regularly communicate industry feedback about student readiness and industry recruiting trends to campus community including but not limited to faculty and administration.
  • Stay current on changing economic and labor conditions and industry trends in state, region, nationally and globally. Develop a Center Advisory Board to better provide guidance and timely information about trends that our faculty and students should be apprised of.
  • Serve on several University Boards, Teams, and Committees to promote the vision and direction of the Center; represent the Center on campus issues, contribute to the strategic planning of the University in order to evolve services and programs. Provide leadership for or assistance with various special programs and projects in line with the strategic direction of the University.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Master’s Degree in a related field

EXPERIENCE: Significant (over seven years) of relevant and progressively responsible experience in a college or university career center or similar professional placement.

OTHER: Some scheduled early morning, evening and weekend hours are required of this position – for student appointments, student programming, employer development, and enrollment management activities.  Some local and regional travel required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Proven leadership experience,
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills,
  • Extensive contacts within the corporate or educational communities,
  • Excellent public relations and presentation skills,
  • Proven ability to develop long range planning and budget administration,
  • Ability to effectively market the Career Center in securing professional placement for students with various academic disciplines and backgrounds,
  • Knowledge of current career development theory, student development theory, job search methods, resume writing, and graduate school searches,
  • Ability to understanding and initiate actions how to best prepare students for future employment,
  • Experience with management and troubleshooting career management systems/technology,
  • Ability to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a variety of private sector industries and organizations related to internships, interviews and hiring, 
  • Prior work experience in business development in which new organizations are identified and secured as partner organizations or clients,
  • Experience in using social media platforms (such as LinkedIn) and networking to secure internships and jobs,
  • Experience with and participation in community organizations such as chambers of commerce and other professional groups.
