SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:    The Director of Instructional Technology provides leadership and vision for the effective use of technology in instruction for UMass Dartmouth. The Director provides long-range planning for the Institution's instructional technology and learning support in a multi-modal academic environment, in the classroom and online. Oversees the design, integration, and standardization of learning-space technology for the University. The Director builds and sustains relationships with faculty, chairs, and deans to facilitate innovation in technology, advocate for new ideas, and support the needs of various departments on campus. In addition, the Director works closely with UMass Online, UMass system office, and other UMass campuses in support of academic technology. The Director works closely with academic leadership to research and implement innovative use of technologies, ensuring quality standards for hyflex, blended and online learning, and assessing the effectiveness of technology integration and impact on student learning. Leads and works with a team that is responsible for instructional design, online and on-prem instructional technologies, and customer training related to software and information technology.  Directs and leads the expansion of training and support for development of online degrees, hyflex and blended (partially) online courses.


  • Provides vision, leadership, and advocacy for the effective use of instructional technology in teaching; oversees initiatives from CITS Instructional Development and in collaboration with others on campus.
  • Works with academic leadership to include Online and Continuing Education, Associate Provosts, Deans, and UMass Online in support and development of online and blended programs;
  • Expands outreach and education to college departments in quality standards for online and blended course design and technology integration (online and in the classroom); 
  • Explores, pilots, and assesses emerging technologies that can transform teaching and learning;
  • Establishes and ensures online course quality standards are implemented across all UMassD online courses;
  • Develops and reviews policies for the use of learning technologies and online learning at the institution;
  • Works closely with departments and faculty to identify and implement technologies appropriate to the University's mission and values; teaching and learning; blended and online programs, classes, and services; classroom technology; promote quality standards and practices in online learning;
  • Provides methods for assessing the impact of instructional technologies and online and blended formats on improvement of student learning;
  • Plans and coordinates IT events, seminars and best practices awards related to new and innovative uses of technologies in teaching and learning;
  • Provides instructional design support to faculty and departments for a variety of technology-enabled pedagogies (e.g., learning management system, clickers, rich media, streaming video, web-based conferencing, lecture capture, responsive/device-agnostic technologies);
  • Works closely with the Center for Access & Success, CITS teams, the UMass Unified Procurement Services Team (UPST), and faculty to ensure that new technologies meet ADA compliance requirements and that online courses meet accessibility standards;
  • Prepares an annual budget;
  • Attend user's group meetings, seminars, and conferences to maintain state of the art knowledge of emerging technologies, learning management systems, and online instructional design practices and strategies
  • Participates in University system wide and campus committees related to learning management systems, instructional technologies, and learning initiatives;
  • Presents research at regional and national conferences;
  • Leads by example in providing excellent customer service; backs up team members in providing technology support.
  • Oversees the development and delivery of documentation and training related to campus software and information technology.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Instructional Design or Instructional Technology with significant (over 7 years) experience in leadership OR

MBA with MIS concentration with significant (over 7 years) experience in instructional technologies and leadership OR

MBA with Leadership concentration with significant (over 7 years) experience in instructional technologies.

EXPERIENCE:     Significant experience in the area of instructional technology, faculty development, online and blended learning training and development and supervisory experience directly related to the position in a higher education setting.

OTHER: Must be available on nights and weekends as needed. Travel will be required for campus business and conferences.


  • Comprehensive knowledge of current instructional theories and principles applicable to instruction in different modalities (online, blended, hyflex, in-person).

  • Applied knowledge of ADA 508 regulations.
  • Applied knowledge of fair use guidelines.
  • Ability to make written and oral presentations clearly and effectively.
  • Effective oral and written communication to work with University community to promote online learning. 
  • Excellent organizational skills.


  • Over ten years of experience working in the area of instructional technology and/or faculty development in a higher education setting.
