Interior Architecture and Design

The Department of Art + Design in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a tenure track position with a starting date and appointment of September 1, 2020. We seek a colleague with significant professional experience, actively engaged in contemporary Interior Architecture and Design, with significant teaching experience, and potentially (if hired at the Associate Professor level) with significant administrative experience.

Candidates should be prepared to teach Interior Architecture and Design at the undergraduate level, from beginning to advanced courses.

If hired at the Assistant Professor level, the primary responsibility will consist of leading five studio courses or 15 credits per academic year. Additional responsibilities include maintaining a rigorous scholarly agenda, advising students, and participating in departmental, college, and university service.

If hired at the Associate Professor level, the primarily responsibility will consist of leading four studio courses or 12 credits per academic year. Additional responsibilities include those listed above as well as acting as the Director of the BS in Interior Architecture and Design program.

Director Responsibilities include:

  • Guide programmatic strategic planning and curriculum development, collaborating as appropriate with other programs, colleges, and deans
  • Oversee program assessment activities, including ongoing monitoring of assessment activities throughout the academic year including reviewing syllabi, suggesting program improvements, and preparing department annual reports with faculty members
  • Ensure that students in the program are supported with internships and capstone projects that are appropriately relevant and rigorous
  • Lead development of accreditation initiatives (for programs with external accreditors}
  • Work across the college to strengthen recruitment and retention for the IA+D program and participate in related events and activities; promote program at open houses, admitted student days and other events.
  • Develop and manage a program advisory board of alumni and community representatives, holding at least one meeting per year.
  • Represent the program externally and identify ways to engage with external constituencies
  • Select, develop and retain a diverse and high-performing faculty, full-time and adjunct
  • Plan appropriate and efficient IA+D course scheduling and rotations
  • Establish teaching schedules in consultation with faculty consistent with student needs
  • Propose and manage program budgets consistent with the needs of the college
  • Perform administrative duties as needed during summer to support hiring, assessment and recruiting

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

An MFA, MID, MArch, MS (60 cr), MA (60 cr) or appropriate Master’s Degree in Interior Architecture and Design or aligned field; professional certification such as NCIDQ, LEED, and/or WELL certification; a demonstrated, significant record of professional or scholarly achievement; current professional engagement with the field of Interior Architecture and Design; well versed in the technology currently used in professional practice; knowledge and credentials appropriate for preparing students for licensure; and at least five years of college-level teaching experience. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Additional minimum qualifications for the Associate Professor position: experience in an administrative position such as Chair of a Department (includes documented success with budget process, scheduling, and assessment); ability to supervise, mentor and motivate faculty and staff.

Ideal candidates will have evidence of innovative cross-disciplinary practices, community engagement, a collaborative leadership style, and the ability to effectively work across programs and disciplines.
