SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:    The Undergraduate Academic Advisor I supports ongoing retention and student success initiatives and activities at the University in order to increase undergraduate student retention and student success.  The Undergraduate Academic Advisor adheres to campus-wide advising standards, policies, procedures and practices for Academic Advising at UMass Dartmouth.  Supports  at-risk students, using appropriate technology and other best practices.  Collaborates with University staff and faculty to provide effective integrated advising and retention activities.  Follows protocols for students placed on academic warning and probation, and implements student success and retention plans. Communicates as necessary with respective college administrators and faculty in general and specific retention issues and represents the college at various admissions, retention and other student events.  Engages in College and University retention initiatives, including software utilization and other technologies and resources to support student success.   Follows the University and College’s recommended best practices to transition students into UMass Dartmouth, support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.


  • Provides advising, retention and success initiatives to a cohort of undergraduate students.
  • Pro-actively tracks students identified as 'at risk' and provides additional support.
  • Explains program requirements to enrolled and potential students as well as provide information about appropriate resources and opportunities.
  • Provides general reports and summary analysis of collected student data to Deans, supervisors, and faculty.
  • Assists in the development of advising and academic mapping materials and workshops, and participates as appropriate  to college and departments.
  • Provides academic advising to student advisees and develops academic plans.
  • Develops and implements retention plans for students who are on academic warning, academic probation and subject to dismissal and potential impact to financial aid.
  • Consults with University departments and other units on campus to assist student success.
  • Communicates and meets regularly with advisees.
  • Follows the individual college and departments’ academic requisites and protocols as required.
  • Participates in College and University committees such as those devoted to enrollment management, retention, academic advising, etc.
  • Other related college and department duties and tasks as assigned. 


EDUCATION:Bachelor's Degree

EXPERIENCE:Previous (over 1 year) experience advising/counseling students

OTHER: Available for evening/weekend hours as needed.  Limited travel may be required.


  • Able to relate to students, faculty and University personnel
  • Knowledge of current student development theory and research.
  • Able to counsel students in severe academic difficulty
  • Strong organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong technical, data analytic, and reporting skills
  • Strong communication skills.


  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate mentors.
